Subtask 2.2 Educational Meetings of Interested Parties for Input and Organizational Support

Texas AgriLife Extension Service will work with agency partners to organize, promote and conduct meetings in each of the eight counties within the Pecos Basin. Workshops that will be conducted include informational meetings, skill development meetings, discovery meetings, and meetings to solicit public comments.

Informational meetings will inform landowners, operators and other interested parties about conditions within the basin and efforts to monitor, correct or improve the Basin. At these meetings, data will gathered to compare how stakeholder opinions have changed throughout the process of studying the Basin and developing and implementing the watershed plan.

Skill level meetings will provide landowners and land managers with information about best management practices, including strategies to control saltcedar and saltcedar regeneration issues; agricultural management practices to prevent salinity damage; and tactics for riparian management.

Discovery meetings will be carried out to solicit input from stakeholders (i.e., landowners, land managers, agricultural producers, policymakers, and the public) that will be used to develop the Basin-wide watershed plan. The status of monitoring and assessment efforts will be presented and the ways in which a watershed plan may improve the watershed will be described.

Public comment meetings will be carried out after the Watershed Plan has been developed but before the Plan is implemented. These meetings will provide a detailed presentation of the Plan and will provide opportunities of public input and feedback.

Deliverables for this Subtask

  • Four types of meetings will be held throughout the Basin (described above).
  • Data about attendance at these meetings and a list of key contacts will be compiled.
  • Efforts will be made to assess the effectiveness of tasks associated with this project to educate the public about water issues in the Pecos Basin.
